Vegni trained at the Istituto d'Arte di Cascina near Pisa and worked in kitchen design from the late 1960s before founding his own studio. Across more than fifty years he has designed for Effeti, Edra, Zanussi, Lema and Valli e Valli, covering kitchens, appliances, hardware and interiors.
The furniture that reaches auction is his work for Fasem, most of it made with Gianfranco Gualtierotti, born in Rome in 1944 and a specialist in polyurethane and aircraft seating. The P40 chair is the piece people know: a flat chromed or lacquered steel frame carrying a seat and back in textured industrial rubber.
It is late modern rather than mid-century and it is priced that way. The rubber is what to inspect, since it hardens with age, and the chrome is what survives.
