Rooms & ProjectsUnder $2,500: Where Collecting Modern Design Can Start
Eight lots in the current sale with a high estimate at or below $2,500, each of them by a designer with a documented body of work.
Tapiovaara graduated in interior design in Helsinki in 1937, worked at Asko, and spent the war designing field furniture for the Finnish army with almost no material to work with. The Domus chair of 1946, made for student housing in Helsinki, came directly out of that discipline: plywood and solid birch, stackable, shipped flat, cheap enough for an institution to buy hundreds.
Knoll distributed it in the United States from around 1949. The Pirkka bench and stool for Laukaan Puu followed in the 1950s, in pine with lacquered birch legs, and the Fanett and Mademoiselle chairs came through Asko and Artek.
He took six gold medals at the Milan Triennale. The furniture remains reachable, and the pine pieces in particular have grown more interesting with age as the surface takes on colour.
