Roger Capron
1922–2006
Vallauris ceramist who pressed tile into furniture, making coffee tables whose tops are glazed and fired rather than veneered.
Blin qualified as an engineer in the aeronautical and automotive industries and worked at Matra Aviation in Paris before leaving in 1949 for ceramics. He opened his own atelier in 1954 and won the Bernard de Palissy grand prize in 1958 for work drawing on prehistoric cave painting.
The signature is a technique rather than a shape. Decoration is cut into the raw clay, sgraffito fashion, then covered with a soft clouded glaze, usually turquoise or blue and sometimes ochre. The motifs are birds, horses, fish and stylised figures, drawn with a few confident lines.
He held office in the French ceramics profession, as vice-president of the Académie Internationale de la Céramique and from 1970 president of the ceramists' trade body. The vases and lamp bases remain affordable and the surfaces reward close looking.
